How does a company's political ideology affect your shopping habits?

This week, a Los Angeles developer announced a new smartphone app that lets shoppers scan items in their carts to see if the products are made by Koch Industries or other corporate conglomerations. Buycott (free, available on iPhone and Android) will scan the barcodes on your grocery store haul and see what major corporation it traces back to. Users can also join or create crowdsourced campaigns to avoid certain causes like GMOs or companies that donate to homophobic organizations.

Since Buycott’s release earlier this week, it has skyrocketed to No. 10 in the iTunes App Store. Creator Ivan Pardo said it’s getting more than 10 new users per second.

The idea behind the app was to let consumers “vote with their wallets” by giving them an easy way to find out who’s behind their household goods. Companies such as Chick-fil-A and Papa John’s have felt both the wrath and support of consumers after publicly supporting right-wing causes. The CEO of Starbucks encouraged people who are against same-sex marriage to sell their stock in his company.
